Belize in Central America was the British Honduras until 1981. This culturally diverse country is the size of Massachusetts and has a population of around 300,000. Tourism is the largest industry of the country. The residents of the villages of northern Belize are descendants of Mayans. The Mayans are an ancient people who built large temples in search of the true God. Today, Spanish, English and Mayan are their languages. The economy is based on growing sugar cane and papayas.  In the towns of northern Belize, there are many other ethnic groups, such as Mestizos, Creoles, and Chinese.  The population of Belize is relatively young in age.  Chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, and motor vehicle accidents have replaced tropical diseases (such as malaria) as major causes of morbidity and mortality.
