FOREWORD

Through the years records of the Columbia Cemetery have been kept primarily in the memories of people who have buried loved ones there. Some graves have undoubtedly been lost in time past. This survey is an attempt to provide a permanent record of graves at this time. Since the cemetery is still active, this survey should be updated periodically.

The information in this work has been gathered as accurately as possible as of April 30, 1994. However, further identification of unmarked graves and notification of unintentional errors, omissions or additions will be appreciated. I would like to thank Mrs. Kathy Jernigan for reading and recording inscriptions on tombstones. Many are almost illegible. Also, I thank Mr. L. H. Adams for his computer work, research and invaluable advice and help.

The plats are schematic and not to scale. They are designed to help locate particular graves quickly and easily.

The cemetery is owned by the Town of Columbia, and maintained by Friends of Columbia. The oldest marked grave is that of an infant, William J. McGriff, who died June 10, 1839. In 1883 an improvement committee initiated considerable work which was financed by popular subscription. An extension of land on the north side was given by Mr. McGriff. It was at that time a wrought-iron fence was put up around the enclosure, trees and shrubbery were trimmed and new walks made. In April 1883, Mr. Wiley Brooks, a brother of Rev. W. L. Brooks (who is buried in the cemetery), erected the entrance house or “summer house” (now generally called gazebo). Mr. Cecil Bomont Culbreth, who died March 14, 1934, was the first person buried in the south extension. The extension on the west side was given by Mr. John Oakley in 1980. In 1993 the Friends of Columbia promoted the repair and painting of the fence, removing the badly broken sections on the east side and planting a row of trees as a boundary.

Donations for cemetery upkeep may be made to Friends of Columbia, P. O. Box 77, Columbia AL 36319-0077. Copies of this survey may be purchased from the same source.
